Situated in the northern half of the island, Santa Brigida is a picturesque residential town ideal for those seeking a relaxing holiday in pretty surroundings.

Just 17 km away is the capital city of Las Palmas where visitors can experience a whole variety of shops, bars, restaurants and entertainment venues.

Within the town there are narrow streets to wander around with numerous shops. The town has a market every Sunday which is well worth a visit.

Santa Brigida is situated approx 26 km from the airport.

As you drive through Santa Brigida, you'll probably say - Was that it?

There really isn't much to this both-sides-of-the-road- row of houses. It does have a beautiful view down into the valley below and onto a landscape of the sort of sun-tinged scenery unique to Gran Canaria stretching out for miles around.

The gnarled pine trees dotting the roadsides are fascinating in themselves. Many look as if they've been windswept and then lacquered to keep the strange shapes they form. A bit like one of my hairdos on a bad day!

For a quiet place to stay it'd be difficult to beat. Though the silence is often broken by the beeping of horns as drivers round the hairpin bends and let each other know they're coming.

If gardening interests you and you fancy making the Botanical Gardens the focus of your stay, Santa Brigida is but a few short kilometres away from it. The gardens are so huge it's almost impossible to appreciate them in a day and they've become just another forgotten attraction. Shame, because they're a fantastic testimony to the very varied nature of the plant life on Gran Canaria.

Santa Brigida is a very rural retreat. Shops are a good distance away, but there's always a solution at hand. Try catching hold of the nearest goat if you run out of milk for your cornflakes in the morning.

Nightlife in Santa Brigida? Would probably consist of reading a book by candlelight accompanied by the fluttering beat of the wings of a moth drawn to the flame. Insider Sig
