Insider's View

Gran Canaria Insider ...there's something about it that makes me go, Yeeehaaah, ride'em cowboy!

There really isn't a lot of anything much in Aguila Playa, but there's something about it that makes me go, Yeeehaaah, ride'em cowboy! It's only a once a week affliction so I try not to worry about it too much.

Other than me doing Clint Eastwood impressions every time I'm in the vicinity, this little bay is so quiet you can hear the stones rolling one on the other as the waves break against the shore. Nice sound effects, but not so good for your spinal column. For laying on this beach, I'd recommend you take a well cushioned beach mat and the more padded the better.

Tie your parasol to the nearest boulder, it's either that or carry a pickaxe, and sit and watch the windsurfers whiz past at high velocity. This part of the coast is a popular spot for this strenuous sport. You'd need to have a bit of experience to manage the gusts or you'd be well on the way to Fuertaventura before you knew what had hit you.

You might get a whiff of fish as you're basking on the beach, but you'd need to be a seal to enjoy it. The local fishermen set up stalls on the roadside and wait for the motorists to stop. If you contemplate buying the fish, get it early, they haven't got mobile refrigerators. If the catch has been bad, they swap to fruit and you'll get some juicy watermelon or thirst quenching cactus fruit instead.

If you're out having a moonlit stroll on a Friday night and hear the sounds of gunshots over the strains of the theme tune from the Magnificent Seven, don't worry, but duck in case the arrows come flying next. No, you haven't time-warped to the Wild West, it's just the sounds of the Sioux City show echoing up the rocky ravine. Though in all honesty there's a lot more cowboys than there are Indians, but it's a pretty authentic looking cowboy town... right down to the horse manure.

The once a week BBQ event is a popular night out and if you plan on going, lady's do yourself a favour and leave the high heels in your suitcase. The streets of Sioux City, not unlike their original counterparts, are paved with dirt and the side-walks are old timbers so stilettos' make walking impossible. Or could that be the free bar? It's not the place, in a haze of intoxicated inebriation, you can take your shoes off either, you never know what you might stand in!
