Las Palmas Holidays
Travel Agent's View
Located on the north east of the island, Las Palmas Gran Canaria is the capital city which has so much to offer visitors of all ages. The busy city offers an abundance of shops, bars and restaurants, as well as many museums, botanical gardens, galleries and stunning cathedrals for visitors to explore.
There is plenty of hotels and holiday apartments to choose from, from 2 star B&B's to 5 star luxury hotels, all budgets are catered for.
For those who wish to relax and catch a few rays, there are four lovely beaches here, Playa de las Canteras was actually the first tourist resort on the island and offers a long stretch of sandy beach with many shops, bars and restaurants along the promenade. Playa de las Alcaravaneres has two sailing clubs and the waters off the beaches of Playa de San Cristobal and Playa de la Laja offer perfect conditions for surfing.
The city also boasts many fantastic festivals and carnivals which are not to be missed when visiting here, the main one is Fiesta de San Juan, held on the 24th of June to celebrate the day the city was founded which also coincides with summer solstice. Fire-works, music and dancing all add to the wonderful party atmosphere.
Las Palmas is located approx 20 km from the airport.
Insider's View
Over the last couple of decades Las Palmas has become seriously under-rated as a holiday destination. Of course, there are areas where you wouldn't want to send your worst enemy on a stroll round, but then all big ports have that in common. Gran Canaria's capital often gets overlooked in favour of the beach, the blue skies and sea views of the south. Yes, they are beautiful, but Las Palmas is really something else.I love the old quarter around Triana and Veguetta because the atmosphere is so completely different to anything you'll experience in the resort areas. It's much more civilised and with that old world feel to it which the specially created holiday places just haven't got. What I like best is the proper architecture. It makes a nice change from seeing white squares all the time.
The city's also been blessed with one of the best beaches on the island, Las Canteras. The whole area is vaguely reminiscent of a British sea-side town right down to the weather, but without the fish and chips. The one thing the city lacks is the permanent sun of the south. It's still warm, but can often be cloudy and overcast.
If you're worried about getting lost in the city try the Smartour. It's an amazing new device which you can hire for a day from the main bus station in San Telmo. The gadget, a bit like a photographic, talking guide book, has its own built in GPS system which tells you exactly where you are and gives you the cultural information about the spot you're standing in all at the same time. At the moment it only covers the Veguetta and Triana areas, but it's still worth the fifteen Euros fee and not at all like a tour guide, when you're fed-up with listening to it, you can switch it off!
One thing I make sure I don't miss is the annual handicraft fair held in San Telmo just after Christmas. Everything on sale is made by local craftsmen from around the seven islands. The variety and quality of the goods on the stalls is unbelievable and for some strange reason isn't available in the majority of normal souvenir shops.
In some parts the city can be daunting. The rows and rows of dull-coloured tower blocks do nothing to lighten the landscape of the outskirts and put a lot of people off, but the council are trying hard to change the city's image. In fact it's the only place I know where they've painted a slum and then sold the photos as picture postcards. Don't go home without one!
