Situated on the south of the island, Arguineguin is a small town which will appeal to those seeking a relaxing holiday. There is a good range of holiday accommodation to choose from, from self catering apartments to first class hotels, there is something for every one.
The night life here is fairly laid back with most evening entertainment being provided by hotels. Holiday makers who wish to spend the evening out and about in the town then there are plenty of restaurants which offer local and international cuisines, catering for all tastes and budgets and bars in which to enjoy a quiet drink or two.
The resort has a small sandy beach with a promenade which connects to the neighbouring resort of Patalavaca. There are plenty of activities and attractions for visitors to enjoy in and around the resort. The natural sand dunes of Maspalomas are just 13 km away and are not to be missed. There are also golf courses and water sports available nearby.
The town market is held every Tuesday and is great for those who wish to pick up a bargain and holiday souvenirs.
The resort is situated approx 43 km from the airport.
Insider's View
Arguineguin is one of those quirky places, you either love it or hate it. If your first impression is the second my advice would be to give it a chance, it grows on you.
For me the best parts are along the sea-front around the area called La Lajilla. The whale's tail statue will tell you you're in the right place. It's life sized, so you can't miss it. Tucked in behind the Hotel Dorada Beach is a beautiful palm tree fringed sea-pool which beats the scrap of stony-sand beach hands down for bathing.
Most locals, me included, tend to drift to Arguineguin to shop. There's a lot better choice here than in Puerto Rico and the prices are considerably lower. Tuesday is the statuary market day and the village gets a bit chaotic. It's the same stall holders in residence as in Puerto Mogán, so if you don't go to both markets you won't be missing out on a great deal.
The modern air-conditioned centre, La Marea, has a few brand name shops like Hipercor and Stradivarius, but for proper bargain hunting try the main street where the new pedestrianized shopping zones are very pleasant to stroll around. There's usually some good buys to be found in the shoe shops and boutiques. Try Alonzo Brothers for some three for the price of one beach footwear and the best handbag buys.
Halfway through the village a metal bridge spans the main road and leads into the labyrinth-like Ancora centre which is an Aladin's cave of all sorts, even second-hand. If you're using the local bus service as transport give yourself at least half an hour, to find your way out, before you need to go to the stop.
Arguineguin, as strange as it may seem, on a culinary level is noted by the locals for its oriental touch. By resident's ratings two of the top restaurants in the area are Fusion in the Ancora, which is a specialist Thai restaurant, and Lun's, reputedly the best Chinese in the south.
