The picturesque resort of Agaete is situated on the north west coast of the island.

The resort enjoys superb weather all year round with lovely hot summers and pleasantly warm winters, making it ideal for holiday makers who are looking for a relaxed atmosphere surrounded by the natural beauty of the area.

The night-life is very low-key with evenings mainly spent enjoying one of the numerous restaurants. Attractions within the resort include botanical gardens, church and art galleries.

The small beach here is typical of the Canaries with dark volcanic sand. Waters sports and dolphin watching trips are available nearby.

The resort is situated approx 56 km from the airport.

Insider's View

Gran Canaria Insider This part of the island is about rugged Atlantic views; huge waves breaking into white foam on black beaches, tiny rocky coves, and oh yes, in case I forget... bananas.

Agaete perches on the cliffs of the north-west tip of Gran Canaria and is backed by a dramatic ridge of pine-topped mountains. It's a stunning setting and the perfect place for soothing fragile nerves. I'd to go there once a week if I could. There's no loud noises apart from the crashing of the sea against the shore, the squawk of a solitary seagull soaring on the wind and the rustle of banana plant leaves.

To get there is relatively simple because of the well-planned bypasses around the city of Las Palmas. Leave the airport and head north, it's well sign-posted. There's not a lot of traffic to contend with either which is surprising as it's along the same route you'd take to catch the Fred Olsen fast ferry to Tenerife.

This part of the island is about rugged Atlantic views; huge waves breaking into white foam on black beaches, tiny rocky coves, and oh yes, in case I forget... bananas.

The areas surrounding Agaete and Galdar are dedicated to the growth of this Canarian delicacy. Plantation after plantation of the broad green-leafed banana plants will spread out before your eyes. You'll see bananas in all stages of growth, from tiny digit-sized ones to well, big, banana-sized ones, but don't plan on sampling them fresh from the tree as they're usually long gone before they're ready to eat.

I used to love coming up here when the kids were young. Livestock is in short supply in the south, apart from the odd goat or two, but here the veritable bouquet of nature assailing your nostrils as you drive past the pig pens and cow sheds could be classed as an educational trip on rural aromas.

The last time we were in Agaete we stopped at the small and very Canarian bar in the Plaza de Constitucion for some refreshment and to pat the horses tethered up outside.

It's a beautiful part of the island to stay in if you want peace and quiet. It's well situated if you want to explore the north or travel to other islands during your stay and perfect for studying banana-ology. If you're allergic or have a phobia about this soft, yellow fruit do what the birds do and fly further south.
